ATTACK OF THE TIAs (The Quiet Killers)

It was approximately 10:15 AM. On a bright sunny morning that Aashai was exiting the post office and entering his 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. He was pushing the keyless starter button, when he was suddenly overtaken by a strange sensation of numbness on the left side of his face. This numbness began to spread down the left side of his body affecting his arm, hand, leg, and foot.

Aashai realized just what was happening to him. So, he quickly decided to lock the car and rapidly limp to the Urgent Care Office 25 feet away. He knew he very little time to receive attention before it can become a permanent condition. The paralysis was traveling fast and causing him to lose all ability to function.

He reached the building and slammed the door opened and rushed to the reception’s window. As he made his way to the window, he couldn’t but help to notice how the waiting patients were looking at him as if he was a vagrant coming in off the street. No one moved to assist him in his time of struggle. What really made him feel bad was the fact that a black woman simply sat and watched nonchalantly.  She never budged to see what was going on with this black man who was in obvious need of help. He quickly rationalized that she didn’t want the white women sitting around to associate her with this big, muscular black that stormed into the office causing so much noise.

Aashai made his way to the window and slammed his fist on the counter which startled the receptionist and demanded that she call someone to help him because paralysis was overtaking his left side. The receptionist in her fright abruptly disconnected her call and yelled for assistance. As Aashai began to fall to the floor, the door swung opened and a black nurse ran out to catch him. She stated to him that he had to hold on because she could not carry him. So, Aashai used her as support to lift himself up.

She laid him on the patient bed in the nearest office. Another assistant immediately began to check his blood pressure only to learn that it was 211 and climbing. The doctor came in and stated that he was experiencing a stroke and need to be taken to Albany Medical Hospital emergency room where they had the stroke trauma unit.

The effects of the stroke began to subside. The EMS placed him on a stretcher and began administering IV to stabilize the patient. When Aashai had another episode and shook uncontrollably. The ambulance traveled at a priority one while calling in the situation. Aashai was delivered to the neurological unit where they began to examine him to determine the extent of damage. The residency doctor asked all the necessary questions and made a diagnosis as to what needed to be done.

Aashai was informed that he required tPA (tissue Plasminoen Activator) which is a blood thinner that dissolves any and all clots that may exist in the blood system. It’s so effective that it’s known to cause internal bleeding at times around the brain and others areas. However, it has to be given within 4.5 hours of the incident.

Aashai was admitted to the trauma unit and placed under observation. He later learned that after three CT scans, MRI, and MRA, the doctors were unable to determine what caused the TIA. The doctors concluded that it was a small stroke that was undetectable by the scans. But what was determined was that his triglycerides were extremely high which triggered his blood pressure to rise so high.

Aashai has been released after three days of treatment and observation with the instructions of reducing the intake of white sugar. He was warned that if he didn’t cut back on the sugar intake the medicine he is taking will not stop him from another stroke.

This is a true story, my friends. Just this past Wednesday, I experienced a small stroke, and was fortunate to come out of it undamaged. But I have seen others who weren’t so lucky. These others were seriously impaired. They could not remember the smallest thing as what the day is. Nor who is the president. I do not want to become like that and I don’t think you want to do the same. So…I strongly suggest that you begin a new diet and make certain you will never be on a trauma unit as I did.

I’m only giving you the short version of events.

    Your concerned Brother

    With love,

    Ausar Neter Aashai

    ARE YOU LISTENING?…(CHAPTER VIII)

JUST AS KARIMBE ENDED HIS SPEECH, TEFNUT WAS CALLING THE HOME OF HATHOR.

IT WASN’T UNTIL THE SIXTH RING THAT HATHOR ANSWERED THE PHONE.

    JAMBO, HATHOR SPEAKING.

    JAMBO, HATHOR. THIS IS TEFNUT.

OH…I WAS BEGINNING TO WONDER WHEN YOU WERE  GOING TO BUZZ ME.

    HAVE YOU SPOKEN WITH KARIMBE?

NDIYO.  HE WISHED FOR US TO GATHER THE TROOPS.

I BELIEVE THERE’S GOING TO BE SOME SORT OF ACTION IN THE NEAR FUTURE.  AND OUR ASSISTANCE WILL BE GREATLY NEEDED.

    YEAH…I HAD ANTICIPATED THAT MUCH.

    WHAT DO YOU THINK?

I THINK IT’S GONNA BE A REPRIEVE OF THE LAST DEMONSTRATION.  I WILL BE GOING TO VISIT HIM THIS WEEKEND.  ARE YOU RIDING?  I’M SURE UMOJA WOULD BE HAPPY TO SEE YOU.

I BET HE WOULD.  HE HAS WRITTEN A POEM TO ME THE OTHER DAY.  WOULD YOU LIKE TO HEAR IT?

OF COURSE.  THE NDUGU CAN WRITE.  HE REALLY KNOWS HOW TO EXPRESS HIMSELF.

    OKAY…HOLD ON A MINUTE.

THERE WAS SILENCE FOR A BRIEF MOMENT.  HOWEVER, TEFNUT WONDERED IF HATHOR WAS STILL PURSUING HER FANTASIES, WHICH WERE THEIR DEEP SECRET.

    I’M BACK.  ARE YOU READY?

    C’MON GIRL…READ THE POEM.

ALL RIGHT…ALL RIGHT…TAKE IT EASY. THE TITLE IS—“ARE YOU LISTENING?”

WITHIN THE CONFINES OF MY HEART…A VOICE IS SILENTLY REVERBERATING AND EXPANDING THE WALLS TO THEIR APOGEE…IT IS A PLACE THAT HAS, FOR SOMETIME, BEEN NEGLECTED, BRUSHED-OFF AND ABUSED…IT IS A CRY TO BE FREE…ARE YOU LISTENING? THE WORDS RUSHED FORTH LIKE A RIVER’S FLOW…EBBING AND AUGMENTING IN RESPONSE TO THE ATTENTION GIVEN…REQUESTING YOUR LOVE AS ITS SOURCE TO GROW…. ARE YOU LISTENING? THEY ARE WORDS OF PROMISE, VULNERABILITY, AND COMMITMENT.  THE PROMISE TO RESPECT YOUR WISHED…THE PROMISE TO REMAIN VULNERABLE TO YOUR DESIRES, AND THE PROMISE OF BEING COMMITTED TO YOUR EXPECTATIONS…ARE YOU LISTENING? LISTENING IS THE KEY TO EMANCIPATING THE FETTERED VOICE WITHIN MY HEART.  HOWEVER, PARTICIPATION IS MOST DIFFICULT TO THE POINT OF INFIDELITY,WHEREBY, LIKE THE GENII OF ANTIQUITY, THIS VOICE IS UNABLE TO PART, REMAINING IMPRISONED IN THE DEPTHS OF MY HEART PERPETUALLY…ARE YOU LISTENING?

Tefnut and Hathor were quiet for what seemed an eternity, WHEN TEFNUT SAID…CHILD, YOU BETTER SNATCH THAT MAN.  AND FAST.

YOU KNOW, I’M HONESTLY CONSIDERING IT BUT I’M SCARED OF BEING HURT AGAIN.

I UNDERSTAND FULLY WHAT YOU’RE SAYING, HOWEVER NO ONE IS FAIL-

SAFE.  WE JUST GO THROUGH LIFE HOPING THE ONE WE CHOOSE IS ABLE TO GROW OLD WITH US.  IT’S A PROCESS OF LIFE WE CANNOT ESCAPE.

YEAH…I SUPPOSE YOU’RE RIGHT.  I THINK I WILL GO WITH YOU.  WHAT TIME ARE WE LEAVING?

I WILL PICK YOU UP AT 7:00 AM SHARP.  BE READY.  I WANT TO GET THERE BY 9:00 O’CLOCK.

ALL RIGHT.  LALA SALAMA (GOOD NIGHT), TEFNUT.

    LALA SALAMA, HATHOR.

    THE CIPHER…(CHAPTER VII)

THE SUN IS SETTING WITH A DEEPLY ORANGE TINGE GIVING INDICATION OF THE BARELY BEARABLE TEMPERATURES IT HAS BEEN EMITTING UPON THE EARTH FOR THE PAST WEEK.  THE YARD IS VERY ACTIVE.  EVERYONE IS OCCUPIED WITH SOMETHING.  THERE ARE THOSE PLAYING BASKETBALL, SPADES,SOCCER,AND LIFTING WEIGHTS. EVEN THE RAPPERS ARE RECITING THEIR VERSES TO THE HUMAN SYNCOPATED BEAT MADE BY THE MOUTH AND CHEST.  BUT KARIMBE’S EYES ARE VERY MUCH ALERT TO EVERY MOVEMENT.  HIS EARS ARE PICKING UP EVERY SOUND AS HE MAKES HIS WAY TO THE MEETING.  HOWEVER, HE FOUND A MOMENT TO STOP AND BRIEFLY LISTEN TO ONE OF THE RAPPERS.

WHEN THE REVOLUTION COMES.  SOME OF US WILL PROBABLY CATCH IT ON T.V. WITH CHICKEN HANGING FROM OUR MOUTHS.  YOU’LL KNOW IT’S A REVOLUTION BECAUSE THERE WILL BE NO COMMERCIALS.

    WHEN THE REVOLUTION COMES…

    WHEN THE REVOLUTION COMES…

PREACHER PIMPS WILL SPLITS THE SCENE WITH COMMUNION WINE STUCK IN THEIR BACK POCKETS…FAGGOTS WON’T BE SO FUNNY THEN, AND JUNKIES WILL QUIT THEIR NOD AND WAKE UP WHEN THE REVOLUTION COMES.

KARIMBE SMILED AS HE CONTINUED ON

WHEN KARIMBE APPROACHED THE WAITING MEMBERS, HE GREETED THE INKOTANYI(THE INDEFATIGABLE ONES), THE SECURITY WITH THE MOZAMBIQUE SALUTATION…SELAM NNA WADADA(PEACE & LOVE).

UPON SEEING HIS ENTRY, UMOJA CALLS THE MEETING TO ORDER, AND KARIMBE TAKES HIS PLACE AT THE FRONT.

MWEUSI MTU, KARIMBE (BLACK MAN, WELCOME).

    KARYBY, KARIMBE…THEY RESPONDED.

I DON’T HAVE TO TELL YOU THAT THE MBWEHAS HAVES STRUCK AGAIN.  THEY HAVE TAKEN DOWN ANOTHER OF OUR YOUTH.  THIS IS NOT GOOD.

THE REASON THEY FEEL PERMITTED TO COMMIT SUCH ACTS IS BECAUSE WE ARE TOO DIVIDED AS A PEOPLE.

WE MUST ELIMINATE DISCRIMINATION AMONGST OURSELVES.  SECULAR THOUGHT, ESPECIALLY FOR PEOPLE OF COLOR IN AMERIKA, IS SELF DEFEATING AND COUNTER-PRODUCTIVE.  WE MUST ADOPT AND ADVOCATE A MORE NATIONALISTIC APPROACH BUT MORE SO IN A NON-TRADITIONAL METHOD.

I ASK YOU, NDUGUS…HOW CAN WE EXPECT TO EFFECTIVELY ENAMEL AND PREPARE OUR CHILDREN TO RESPOND CONSTRUCTIVELY TO BEING CALLED—“NIGGER”, AND RESPOND INTELLIGENTLY WHEN A PROFESSOR, OR ANYONE ELSE SAY, AFRICANS AND OR AFRICAN AMERICANS HAVE MADE NO SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION TO CIVILIZATION, IF NOT BY KNOWING OUR NATURAL HISTORY?

HOW CAN WE EXPECT TO ACHIEVE UNITY, THE PREREQUISITE TO EMPOWERMENT, IF NOT BY SHARING OUR NATURAL HISTORY?

I TELL YOU, PRESERVATION OF BLACK CULTURAL INTEGRITY, ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF BLACK CULTURAL DISTINCTIVENESS.  THESE TWO ELEMENTS OF BLACK NATIONALISM ARE INDISPENSABLE FOR A PROGRESSIVE BLACK POLITICKS.

WHILE KARIMBE WAS SPEAKING TO THE GROUP, HE WAS BEING WATCHED FROM A TOWER ACROSS THE YARD.

NDUGUS…BLACK NATIONALISM IS THE BELIEF THAT BLACK PEOPLE SHARE A COMMON CULTURE AND WORLD VIEW.  HAVE A COMMON DESTINY AND HAVE HAD A COMMON EXPERIENCE; SLAVERY,OPPRESSION, COLONIALISM, AND EXPLOITATION.  RACIAL SOLIDARITY IS PERHAPS THE MOST BASIC FORM OF BLACK NATIONALISM.  PRESUMING NO MOVEMENT, PROGRAM, OR IDEOLOGY, IT IS SIMPLY A FEELING THAT BLACK PEOPLE, BECAUSE OF THEIR COMMON DESCENT, COLOR, AND CONDITION, SHOULD ACT IN UNISON.  A HIGHER AND DIFFERENT LEVEL OF CONSCIOUSNESS IS CULTURAL NATIONALISM, THE VIEW THAT ALL BLACK PEOPLE SHARE A COMMON LIFESTYLE, AESTHETIC, AND WORLD VIEW, OFTEN EXPRESSED IN A DISTINCTIVELY BLACK IDIOM IN LITERATURE, ART, OR MUSIC.  RELIGIOUS NATIONALISM, A SPECIFIC COMPONENT OF CULTURAL NATIONALISM IS THE BELIEF IN A SPECIAL BLACK RELIGIOUS COSMOLOGY, INCLUDING THE IDEA THAT THE DEITY IS BLACK. THE HIGHEST EXPRESSION AND FORM OF BLACK NATIONALISM IS PAN-AFRICANISM.  IN ITS BROADEST SENSE PAN-AFRICANISM IS THE BELIEF THAT AFRICAN PEOPLES SHARE A COMMUNITY OF INTERESTS.  WHETHER THEY ARE IN JAMAICA, BARBADOS, THE UNITED STATES, UGANDA, NIGERIA, SWEDEN, OR SPAIN, BLACKS MUST UNITE IN A COMMON STRUGGLE FOR LIBERATION.

NDUGUS, THIS IS NOT A WORLD IN WHICH THE WEAK, THE IGNORANT, NOR THE FAINT-HEARTED CAN EXPECT TO SURVIVE WITH DIGNITY INTACT.  SO, WE MUST TAKE AN UP FRONT POSITION AND MAKE A POINT BLANK DECISION.

ON THAT NOTE, I”LL END BY SAYING, TO REJUVENATE OUR CONSTRUCTIVE BEHAVIOR, WE SIMPLY HAVE TO RECLAIM OUR NATURAL HISTORY AND HERITAGE AND INCORPORATE IT INTO OUR DAILY LIVES.

    JAMAA YANGU!

    JAMAA YANGU!  THE GROUP RESPONDS.

Pucker Up: Kissing Secrets Revealed How to make a kiss memorable — and avoid kissing mistakes. BY Jennifer Soong

I read this article and thought how it might make you experience nostalgia as it did me. I recall many moments while reading this article and the smile the memories that came to my lips.

How many of you can recall those special moments while you was finding your way in the world of relationship(s)? Come don’t be modest, let’s hear your thoughts.

Whether it’s your first kiss with someone new or your lifetime partner, kissing usually leaves an impression — one that lingers long after your lips have locked.

Kissing often plays an important role in relationships. “It fosters romantic compatibility,” says Michael Christian, author of The Art of Kissing (published under the pen name William Cane). “The more that people kiss, the more they’re able to communicate on a romantic level.”

    The First Kiss

Kirkland Desmond, a software engineer in Tampa, Fla., vividly recalls his first kiss with his wife a decade ago. They were sitting on the couch in her dad’s living room and as he leaned over to kiss her, he lost his balance and fell off the couch, pulling her down with him.

“I was so nervous because she was completely out of my league,” he says. “So our first kiss happened while we were laughing and 10 years and three beautiful children later, we’re still laughing and kissing every chance we get.”

If your first kiss — or any of the many that follow — isn’t what you’re hoping for, talk about it. Many couples hesitate to talk about kissing out of embarrassment, Christian says.

Don’t be shy about telling your partner what you like or asking what your partner prefers, he says. Just don’t do it while you’re kissing, so your partner doesn’t take it as a rebuke.

    Men’s and Women’s Kissing Mistakes

Most of us have clear preferences — turn-ons and pet peeves — when it comes to kissing styles.

Christian says men’s biggest mistake is that they’re too aggressive with their tongues. And men claim that women don’t open their mouths wide enough.

For both sexes, the No. 1 kissing complaint is lack of variety, Christian says. He recommends kissing the different parts of your partner’s face and paying special attention to the ears and neck. He suggests biting softly on the lower lip and nibbling gently on the earlobe.

    Make It Memorable

Two keys to a memorable kiss are pleasing your partner and pleasing yourself.

“Put your whole body into the kiss,” says Marilyn Anderson, author of Never Kiss a Frog: A Girl’s Guide to Creatures from the Dating Swamp. “Without words, your lips should say, ‘Baby, there’s more where that came from!’ There are ways to keep it fresh and new all the time.”

She suggests starting with gentle kisses on the neck, move up to the ear, then go to the lips. Take some small breaks and then come back to the lips.

“Here’s my kissing tip: Put a hand on your kissing partner’s neck,” says Pamela Weiss, marketing director in Los Angeles. “It adds passion, like ‘I can’t get enough.’ And let’s be honest, that’s what makes for a great kiss.”

Don’t get hung up on what a kiss might lead to. Enjoy it for its own sake.

“A good kiss is deep and soulful and you should feel each other’s love through the kiss,” says Dan Landau, an engaged graduate student in Bridgewater, N.J. “A great kiss is an adventure in itself, not a stepping point to something else.”

    Falling Off the Kissing Wagon

Steamy make-out sessions usually happen early on in a relationship, or the honeymoon period.

But later on, when people are in a long-term relationship, they too often stop kissing and lose that intimate connection, says Anderson. In a Redbook poll, 79% of women said they don’t kiss their husbands nearly as much as they’d like.

“You’ve got to keep kissing in the game,” Anderson says. “The emotional importance of a kiss is where it all begins and you shouldn’t let it go just because you’ve known someone for a long time.”

“When my wife kisses me, it’s like she’s telling me, ‘I love you’ without words,” Desmond says.

Time hasn’t made kissing ho-hum for Landau and his fiancee, either.

“If anything, our kisses are better now than they were initially,” Landau says. “We know each other on a much deeper level after two and a half years together. When we first kissed, there were sparks. Now, there are fireworks.
